As technology becomes more common in our everyday lives, CHRs need to be able to adapt to using the tools that the Internet and communication technology like e-mail can provide. At the AGM 2001, interested CHRs went into the computer lab for a hands-on Internet and e-mail workshop.

The workshop was designed to familiarize CHRs with how to use a computer to get on the Internet and gather information. The two-hour session was geared towards the beginner user – someone who may not have much exposure to computers, the Internet or sending e-mail messages. Workshop topics included basic information about computers and Web browsers, how to use a search engine, connecting to the World Wide Web, sending e-mail, privacy and protection on the Internet, and what to do about a computer virus.

The participants each had their own workstation so that the session could be as interactive as possible. It is much easier to learn while doing when using computers. The CHR participants were taught to surf the Internet using a Web browser. They learned how to use search engines to find
information they needed. CHRs browsed NIICHRO’s website and then the new CPNP website where they were encouraged to search for
articles, print articles and send e-mail from the site.
