Training Session: NADA Resources Directory
-Sharing Successes

 “NADA envisions diabetes-free people.”

Lylee Williams - NIICHRO
Kandice Leonard - Executive Director of the National Aboriginal Diabetes Association

The NADA Resource Directory was developed so that people could easily
access diabetes information; it connects people with resources, programs and services.

NADA has four main goals:

1) To support individuals, families and communities in accessing resources for diabetes prevention, education and research.
2)
To create partnerships with organizations committed to prevention and management of diabetes.
3)
To promote community wellness as a strategy to prevent diabetes.
4)
To manage and operate in efficient and effective ways.

The NADA Resource directory was created to be user-friendly and laid out in a way that makes finding resources as easy as possible. Contacting as many people as possible who have diabetes programs in their communities helped to develop the NADA Resource Directory. NADA sent out over 1,000 questionnaires to determine what programs were underway in which communities.

A “scavenger hunt” method is an excellent way to become familiar with the NADA Resource Directory. The object of the “scavenger hunt” would be to establish several different scenarios related to finding data about diabetes programs and then use the NADA Resource Directory to acquire the information needed. For example: “Who would be a good contact for information on establishing a “Sadie’s Walk” in your community?." Another technique is to create a problem-solving project that would reflect a community scenario. For example: “My community gets a lot of rain; how can I keep community members motivated to continue to exercise outside?”

The NADA Resource Directory is an incomparable tool for CHRs to contact people who have created and are experienced with diabetes programs in other communities .
